For the record, the suggestion I made didn't involve changing his boot
loader configuration at all much less installing and migrating to grub. 
It was to use the CD only to get a grub prompt, from which he could have
booted the kernel and GNU/linux install that were on the hard-disk.

(The goal was to avoid the confusion of a rescue environment and to make
accessible his local powerful tools... like gnome and vi :)
