I've worked on a couple of other tape drives and haven't seen the "Error with sense data" before.
I can't quite decipher/translate "mode sense information" on page 61 of:
http://www.certance.com/download/productmanuals/prod_man_sttx401a_en.pdf
Not that it's necessarily related, but was a cleaning tape ever used?
