[nmglug] bsd ports

I was reading an article on linuxfoo.org(1) regarding how to use BSD Ports. 
It sounded good and piqued my interest in bsd again but I need a frame of
reference.  I'm quite comfortable with Debian's apt-get.  Is the bsd ports
similar in nature to apt-get?
