[nmglug] grub error 18

I am installing grub on an old dell dimension that had lilo.
It has a windows partition (hda1) and debian (hda2)
I typed:
grub> root (hd0,1)
grub> setup (hd1)

It can't run 'e2fs_stage1_5' or 'install' and gives me "Error 18: 
Selected Cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS

Again, lilo booted both OS's without a problem.

Anyone have any work-arounds for this?
