I'd go this route instead of trying to add more serial ports.  I have
used Minuteman UPS w/USB monitoring and w/a fairly new 2.6 kernel.  If
their supported OS list includes Red Hat (that's the only GNU/Linux
distribution I have seen them list), it will work with any GNU/Linux.
E.g. their MBK550-E and MBK750-E are pretty cheap.  I have used a few
Pro 700E units.  I have no experience with any other brand of USB UPS.
