joe-
boot the cd - sudo bash - chroot /dev/hda1
passwd (enter) then typoe passwd
if you get command not found or some such for the passwd command
hit ctrl-d (exit chroot)
then do chroot /dev/hda2 ... continue this until you find the partion
with passwd .... this should work ... good luck
