[nmglug] Hard Drive Cloning with Free Software

Does anyone know of a way to do a bit by bit copy of a hard drive in a
laptop to a USB hard drive connected to the laptop using free software?
I believe this is called hard drive cloning. I have a hard drive with
Windows XP Home on it and another that has both Windows XP Home and Red
Hat Fedora Core 3 partitions. I'm interested in doing some significant
modifications to both of these hard drives and wanted to be able to back
them up to a USB hard drive before making the modifications. If there
was a way to do this with some sort of linux boot or rescue CD then that
would be really great.

Thanks,
