Very wrong wrong: debian testing and unstable are the best for keeping
up with packages.  Major infrastructure shifts (new X issues, for
example) might be more tough, but that's minor compared to (for
example) getting a new gaim automatically on your doorstep soon after
Yahoo! messes up the protocol.

And what do you mean by a "debian-based distro" being faster?  Using
various debian-based distros you quickly find out that what you want
is to point /etc/apt/sources.list to the debian archives to get the
stuff.
