Hi everyone. Derek Holzer has contacted me and asked to give a presentation at
the next GLUG. The following explains some of what he does and what he will
present. This fits very nicely with our work with High Mayhem Studios. He will
be presenting at the next meeting, thursday 27th at 5:30. Bring your
laptops/desktops and tell anyone who might be interested.

Hope to see you there
-Jason

Many software tools exist for sound, multimedia and VJ purposes. Few of
them, however, are designed with an open architecture which allows
artists to configure the tools they use themselves. Fewer still are free
to use, share and rebuild. And while many artists have recognized the
need for free and open licenses for their work, the common belief
remains that open source softwares in general, and Linux in particular,
are "too difficult" for them to learn and use.

This talk will give a quick tour through the land of free+open source
software for producing sound and video under Linux [and to a lesser
extent Mac OSX], moving from graphical-user-interface applications
geared towards basic tasks like recording, editing, sequencing and
processing audio and video to the more complex graphical programming
environment Pure Data. Various Linux distributions geared towards audio
and video production will also be introduced.

About the lecturer:
Holzer [USA 1972] is a sound and radio artist based in the Netherlands.
His work focuses on capturing and transforming small, unnoticed sounds
and electromagnetic resonances from various natural and urban locations,
participatory and collaborative media projects, live audiovisual
performance and the use and teaching of free software such as Linux and
Pure-Data.
