The book "Knoppix Hacks" has a section on doing this (and I have used it
succeeefully), and it has many many more.  You can boot into Knoppix and fix a
lot of stuff like this, and some Windows problems too.  Like you can virus scan
your windows partitions with ClamAV while it is not booted into Windows at all.
 That is the best type of virus scan because you are assured that no malware
program is running while the virus scan is running.
