Look into the MySQL ODBC driver and you should find that excel can
access the data via ODBC, see the data connection information under
Excel. Later versions have better support for this, but look for ODBC
DSN as your data source once you setup the database in MySQL and
configure the MySQL ODBC connector and create a system DSN under
Control-Panels -> Administrative Tools -> Data Source.

Also, look into the Toad for MySQL utiltity. The free version should do
everything you need for the next year or so, then you might investigate
the full featured "for pay" version.

I'm thinking it's time to actually learn a DBMS and some SQL. Of course I would like to go towards MySQL but it's a little intimidating.

I'm not sure where I want to end up but I know that I want to eventually keep a repository of approximately 470,000 records per year and be able to generate various reports. Mind you, I'm not a programmer in any sense of the word. Would love if I could use Excel Pivot Tables as the reporting tool with MySQL as the back end.
