----Like OMG! Awesome News----
I know you've all been waiting for this to come together since November
2006 when Sun told us they were GPL'ing Java. Finally it's here!
# apt-get install openjdk-6-jre
Actually I guess it's been there a couple weeks, but I'd gotten
depressed about the lack of movement in icedtea months ago and stopped
paying attention.
And the browser plugin even seems to work. (Of which the previous
failure, had taken all the fun out of the icedtea project for me.)
---Not quite as awesome news---
However as of this writing, only the amd64 package of the browser plugin
is available in the Sid repos:
http://packages.debian.org/sid/icedtea-gcjwebplugin
I don't know why though. Since the source debs built just fine for me on
i386:
http://www.thepromisedlan.org/icedtea-gcjwebplugin_1.0-2_i386.deb
$ apt-get source icedtea-gcjwebplugin
# apt-get build-dep icedtea-gcjwebplugin
$ cd icedtea-gcjwebplugin-1.0
$ debuild -us -uc
# gdebi ../icedtea-gcjwebplugin_1.0-<debver>_i386.deb
Or feel free to use mine:
http://www.thepromisedlan.org/icedtea-gcjwebplugin_1.0-2_i386.deb
(you can get the gpg key (F343E5FC) from the usual keyservers. or
http://www.thepromisedlan.org/sam_noble.gpg.asc if you're into that sort
of thing:)
So uhm, I haven't had a fully working JRE or web plugin since I stopped
hating the freedom; So somebody tell me about some awesome webpages with
Java Applets or something. So far I've mostly just seen Duke the
Triangle dance. :|
However cortado (flumotion's Java applet) is pretty neat:

Now it's too bad youtube wasn't built with cortado. (Though I did notice
the fluendo flash server from that same page plays real well in Gnash.)
That's it for now, hope to see you all tonight at the Baking Co:
