I've generally used VMWare Workstation 5 or version 6 for Linux, with
good results. I've had performance issues with a Dell D820, but I
think that has more to do with the D820 than VMWare. Occasionally
I've had GTK issues with VMWare running on Linux, but always managed
to resolve them..and once running VMware Workstation functions/
performs well.

VMWare Fusion for OS X (Macintosh) performs the best of hypervisor's
I've used.....a really good experience overall (running 32-bit Windows
guests, 32-bit and 64-bit Linux guests).

VirtualBox is purported to work well. I tried it long ago and had
some issues so I went back to VMWare Workstation, but VirtualBox has
evolved a lot since then...and I hear good things. VirtualBox has the
advantage of running on Windows, OS X, Linux, and Solaris.

I'm currently using VMware Workstation 6.x under Ubuntu 8.10 at $work
(wish I was using VMware Fusion on a Mac all the time, but $work
doesn't support Macs).
