I had a similar issue and, though the advice did not work, it has worked in
the past.

Try freezing the drive overnight in a ziploc. get as much air out of it as
possible before hand as humidity can cause issues when condensed :) then, as
quickly as possible, move the drive to the computer, hook up the cable, and
power on. sometimes, this will unstick the heads.

Hi Bill,
No spares...that's for sure...the 7200.10 product line is current...the
7200.11 line was just released...

BUT...the host circuitry is possible but low on the likely failure list with
an electro-MECHANICAL device like a HD.

More likely issues are usually physical/mechanical...like:
head positioning failure - that ziplock bag - freeze overnight thing can
sometimes help
disk motor failure
head stiction - where the R/W heads actually STICK to the surface of the
drive due to adhesion of two highly polished surfaces
head crash - physical skid into delicate hd platter oxides - damage to the
head and/or the media
