What distribution are you running? On Fedora, for example, the value

ONBOOT=no

sometimes must be set to;

ONBOOT=yes

in

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

but it's hard to say without knowing what distribution you're running, e.g.

cat /etc/issue

Fedora release 10 (Cambridge)

(or cat /etc/release)
