Gentlemen: 

Thank you for the several replies. 
I have tried downloading Ubuntu 9.04 more than a few times, each have
had bad checksums,so now I have ordered a cd and will proceed when it
arrives,that being the reason for the oldie 8.04 I have been wrestling
with; thanks for the site address and info, Sam.

Brenden thanks for the heads up,just got home from town and will also
look into you suggestion with great interest anon.

I am tempted to haul the Desktop down to a glug meeting and my just do
that.
