Thanks Mars and Brian, for the correction 'pcmcia',  for the
yenta_socket and cardmgr. I have been relying on the Ubuntu seamless
and sometimes hidden/automated helper settings. So now I have to
really learn linux, which is why I am doing this and writing out the
adventure in the mail lists.
I am taking the weekend off for a visit from my sister, so any delays
now are due to life happening and balancing my time between that and
the work on the laptop.
