The greatest thing about Linux is how many choices you have to improve
your computing. The problem with Linux is unfortunately how many
choices you have. It's like going to a cafeteria when all you want is
a hamburger. Fortunately there are distro's that provide that sort of
'one size fits most' approach, but to the average person on the street
who's aware of 'Linux' but are unaware exactly what Linux is in
relation to the OS at large, they'd have to research various distro's
before they became aware of it, and what they wanted.

I think however as computer hardware prices continue to drop and
computer software prices continue to climb, Open Source Software will
continue it's relentless growth. There will always be a need for
proprietary software for specific needs. But for more generalized
needs, such as OS, Server, Media, Office Applications, FLOSS will
eventually win out. Improvements are produced at a Lamarkian rate, and
by shear innovative pressures alone, proprietary products will not be
able to keep up. This has happened with Web Browsers and I believe
will happen with other sorts of software.
