That was a great old device, I still have one lying around even though it's
become obsolete in many ways. It's probably not going to give you wireless
speed up to 50mbs that your paying for, your best option is to invest in a
newer router that supports the newer AC protocols. I ended up getting the
Asus AC1700, it's open source and already does a lot of what my old WRT
did. Linksys also has their "hackable" model that's up to date and supports
third party firmware, but I think it's a little pricey if I remember
correctly.
As far as recovering a password, you may need to telnet in using a physical
wire, tutorials should be online and I'm not even sure that is a path to
recovery. You really need to find a way to mount the filesystem where you
have full access, not going to be easily done.
If it's confirmed in preferences but doesn't work for login then I would
start by trying a different browser, power cycle maybe, extra careful
typing the credentials.. maybe you already tried these though
