Bah, I thought I was going to be slick and write a few notes on how to
use mstsc.exe to connect to an ubuntu box. Instead I ended up reading
your question again and cannot render any assistance. Just so my words
don't go completely wasted, lets waste some cyberproperty here... maybe

I'm using xrdp running on Ubuntu which I converted to a KDE rather than
Gnome desktop (this was because Ubuntu Gnome Desktop apparently had
some issues which meant you had to download and recompile gdm with a
particular option, and I didn't want to go that far.) You have to use
some universe and maybe even some multiverse packages... here is the
tutorial I loosely based my setup off of:<br>

Xrdp is good because it answers on port 3389, and allows you to setup
and (and therefore choose) a variety of sessions. I only use Xvnc
session into KDE.<br>

Basically the instructions consis of: <br>
Install KDE.<br>
install xvncserver<br>
install xrdp from source<br>
<br>
check the xrdp file to make sure it is using kdm.<br>
<br>
start a xvncserver session using the geometry you would like to use:<br>
xvncserver -geometry 1600x1200<br>
