I don't get the reference to "virtual approach".
I didn't upgrade one version at a time because:

Edgy for ppc didn't work at all

Feisty sound was broken and there were power issues for ppc

Support for Ubuntu on ppc was dropped after Feisty

Gutsy had the same sound and power issues as Feisty

Both Gutsy and early Hardy wouldn't even boot on ppc

the community for ppc worked really hard and figured out the
sound and power issues (there were others, like video)

UpdateManager was remade to allow upgrading from one LTS version
to the next but that didn't work for ppc

The ppc community worked hard and figured out the source.list
problem that was choking UpdateManager

I would have done a clean install of Hardy if I had felt it
necessary but the improvement in UpdateManager was a wonderful solution
as I continued to fall behind in versions.

UpdateManager worked and as I have found out there are lots of
people having issues along the lines that I did, not just for ppc

that's why :-P
I'm having some issues with HAL now that have cropped up over the last
2 days. HAL fails to initialize but I can restart it. Sound is failing
and videos of any format are starting with sound that quits and then
the video freezes. this is the same problem that I had with the Hardy
live CD and that had stopped me from upgrading. I hope it goes away
after more updates.
I doubt that is necessary; you can probably use some virtual approach to
convince yourself that you'll be OK, but what surprised me in this
thread is that you did not do the upgrade one version at a time.
