I googled this and came up with this part of a forum thread re: gaining
root access in a live cd session, which is what I think that you want.
You should just be able to got to System>Administration>Network
and that will open up modem, ethernet and wireless setting. If you
click on the unlock button you will be asked for your password. If you
do what is shown below and change your password then you should be good
to go. I have never been asked for root password during a live cd
session so who knows?:<br>

"Go to: System--> Administration--> Users and groups<br>
You will find only one user, click on him and then click "Properties".<br>
I do not know what the password is but you can change it!<br>
And the you can do whatever you want...<br>

three years! Haven't done much with Ubuntu Live CD lately, but may give

still found wasnt answered but then i remebered something and decided

Run the following command too change the root user's password<br>
sudo passwd root<br>

and it will ask you for the new password you can put it as 1 or

Looks like I may be caught in that endless loop.Entered the modem
settings,the Debian instruction for setting dial up for Ubuntu then stated
to continue use gnome modem monitor,when I located it through search and
tried to open it:I do not have root privilages.do not know how to get root
privilages from graphic interface,any Ideas such as how to start modem from
current settings without the gnome modem monitor and being lead down yet
another garden path .or will I need to abandon this approach and try ppp set
up or similiar.What are your thoughts on the subject. Tnx Anthony K
