Supporting Serial ATA and Parallel ATA interface, the VIA VT6420
is compatible with all kinds of ATA and ATAPI devices and provides
up to four Serial ATA channels for extended connectivity, offering
systems builders complete flexibility to incorporate HDD, CD-ROM,
DVD and other types of ATA and ATAPI devices into PC systems.
So I would guess that the system you have supports BOTH old style
IDE/PATA drives and the new SATA drives as well. Just because his
old drive might be PATA does not mean you have to replace it with
PATA... you should be able to use a SATA drive and see a
performance increase... just be aware that he might have to buy a
SATA cable for the drive if he doesn't already have one.
