I can hear them cheering in the streets... "Hurray, the flash memory lives on!" Just kidding, here is that tool...I just put it at my host, that'll give it something to do for a change :) http://clysto.com/HPFormatTool.zip Let me know if there are any issues with the file, here is the md5 hash 949d1f5a1b9a6c4c645e43798d3611b4 HPFormatTool.zip

That would be a good tool to have Rob, even though it was a
different and very simple issue.

I always keep a copy too, if you want I can put it up in my
dropbox for download (so you could avoid jumping through hoops for
a free tool), but typically if I find myself using that tool I
also find myself throwing a 'bad' card away quite soon, to
avoid wasting time on it. As Nick says, they go bad. The good part
is that it's a bit easier to toss bad flash devices now that they
are so cheap :)

this is what has given me the same situation...if the
camera won't write to it then this is the thing to check
first. The switch sometimes gets activated taking the card
in/out of a device.
As Nick P. suggested…..if the write-protect tab on the SD
card is not the culprit the card will likely have to be
formatted in the camera once the pictures have been
downloaded. The problem with accessing SD cards directly
(via a reader as opposed to the camera being attached to the
computer via USB) is that if a write occurs the file system
can be altered or damaged causing problems. Cameras usually
use FAT16 or 32 but they are not what I would call "normal"
FAT16/32 file systems if one looks at them with a disk
editor. I've seen this (SD card file system problems after
direct access) many times. Usually I recover the photos with
PhotoRec (CGSecurity) on the nearest Linux box and re-format
the SD card in the camera…..and if that doesn't work it's
usually the SD that's gone bad and replacement has solved
the issue.
