Just to let anyone who had interset in this issue and was advising
me, the problem that I had with a bunch of packages being held back
and the Ubuntu update-manager offering a partial upgrade was due to
a couple of PPAs that I had enabled in my software sources.
specifically the Linux-Mint PPA that I had enabled so I could try
the Mint window manager. Apparently it was trying to pull in a bunch
of conflicting packages with the Gnome2 GUI that I prefer. Once I
disabled those PPAs the update went off without a hitch and I got
the new kernel and everything else that makes my box now current,
for Ubuntu 10.10 that is. Still resisting the Unity interface with
all of my might and not doing a new install of a different distro.
thanks to all who piped up!
