What is going on as far as, was the OS working fine and then this
started happening or what? Reinstall nautilus maybe or make sure to
do an "sudo apt-get update && upgrade". I had a lot of
trouble with Ubuntu on old hardware that doesn't have the oomph to
really run the WM. Maybe she could install xfce WM and try that if
it's a inadequate memory issue.<br>

Oh, dear. Now the Documents File Browser and the Desktop File Browser
are frozen. The window says: Not responding. Giving me the choice of
"wait" or "force quit". I've tried waiting, no luck. Force quit the
last time this happened didn't do any good, so I haven't tried it this
time.
It seems this is pretty serious. Coming at a bad time, too: in the
middle of a fundraiser. What do you think? Perhaps I'd just better
take it to a repair shop over here as it is prohibitive to travel to
SFe, even though you are its father.
