On my Acer Aspire 5560 that is. I worked my fingers to the bone
googling and though I learned a lot nothing helped. On yet another
attempted restart and only getting the safe mode resolution,
installing, uninstalling fglrx, proprietary drivers, configuring
everything there is to configure, I saw 2 lines of text flash on the
screen for a pico-second. They referred to freevo and not being able
to lock xauthority (and therefore causing X to open but not function
and that is why my normal user, me, couldn't open up an x session),
which I had installed and deleted on my previous HD, the one that I
cloned from for the Acer. I deleted every scrap of freevo stuff,
rebooted and it's a thing of beauty!<br>
