    <p>I doubt encryption has anything to do with "upgrade space" - I
      would make sure to run 'apt autoremove' first and make sure all
      your old kernels are cleared out of /boot - that's the likely
      culprit. You might need to do this manually if something got hosed
      ... Also, 'apt install ncdu' and then run 'ncdu' in your root
      directory. This will give you a clear n-curses based look from the
      command line of what your offending/large sized directories are.

              encrypt as that does make it difficult for changes to a
              partition. You can wait for other replies, but I will
              venture a solution. In my case I pulled a spare hard drive
              out of the closet and just did a fresh install after
              making the swap. No data is lost, but for you getting your
              files back or transferred will be an issue. A
              non-encrypted backup to external media and fresh install
              would work, too. Or, flush the apt cache - look this up on
              the net or in 'man apt' to get an idea of how to free up
              space. AND, you might wait till April and get the next LTS
              from Ubuntu, or look at Debian 11 as an alternate. <br>

                  encryption.  It looks like upgrading to 20.04 might
                  help but I think the partition still needs to be
                  enlarged and I am not sure if that is an option during
                  the upgrade.</p>
                <p>At any rate, I am hoping someone has some
                  experience/advice to help me sort this out.</p>
