What really helped me was the debian-powerpc archives, and the fact that
the main powerpc kernel developer (Ben H) and a talented XFree86
developer with interest in powerpc (Michael D) actively participate in
debian-powerpc mailing list and provide software that supports powerpc
hardware very well (kernels and updated XFree86 packages + DRM kernel
modules). Their work was necessary to get good hardware functionality
in my iBook.
