[nmglug] gnulinux on macintosh hardware

Well, the four big ones are Debian, Gentoo, Mandrake and Yellowdog.
Yellowdog I've found has fantastic driver support for Apple hardware,
after all, that's the only platform that Yellowdog supports and they
invest all of their time and money making their distro work smoothly on
even some of the most obscure Apple hardware going back even to the 8500
series desktops, something that Mandrake seems to lack from my own
experience. Gentoo is really good, but I've had friends have problems
with it on some Apple hardware. I haven't tried Debian on Apple hardware
before, so I can't offer any advice there.

It does make a difference between laptop and desktop. If it's going to
be a Desktop I'd recommend giving Debian a shot, if it's going to be a
laptop, I'd recommend Yellowdog. Yellowdog seems to support Apple
Powerbooks better than the other distros from my experience and from
what I've read.

Interestingly, Linux for PPC supports more Apple hardware than Mac OS X
does, weird, huh?

Gentoo PPC:

Mandrake PPC:
