I think you'll find that Ubuntu is the way to go on a laptop...  ah, no
CD.  Could you network boot it?  The 'sarge' Debian-installer can be set
up on a server to be network booted.  I've done that, and it works
fairly well.

LAC Rules!  ;-)  I use my LUCGM every day in college.  I really love it.
