I have been following the instructions at
http://www.debian.org/releases/sarge/i386/ch04s04.html.en
which is how to put the Debian installer on a usb stick. It seems to be the same concept, boot a live cd iso off a usb 
stick. But it looks like this is different.

I have not been successful yet. I suspect the problem is that USB modules are not loaded, the URL you gave says, "You 
need to modify linuxrc in miniroot.gz and put the relevant usb modules in modules/usb/." I will have to try that.
