Another thought.

There are also some commercial PCI boards that monitor temperature, but 
they are also expensive.

I have been looking at simple/cheap ways for additional monitoring of PC 
case temperature and get the data, which then can send email or page a 
cellphone (via email to SMS gateway that most cellular providers now 
offer).  At SFI I wrote some scripts to query RAID controller and send 
and SMS message to a cellphone (via email) in the event of a disc drive 
failure, so I figure it ought to be simple to do the same if a 
temperature gets out of spec (i.e. a fan fails).
