[nmglug] hard disk usage

try these two things

1. in synaptic go to settings -> preferences -> files and click the 
"Delete Cached Package Files" button. You might also select the option 
to "Delete downloaded packages after installation"

2. in Thunderbird go to File -> "compact folders". Depending on how much 
mail you have this can really save some space. You can set it to 
automatically run when mail reaches a certain size. Go to Edit -> 
preferences -> advanced -> check off under "disk space"
