Yeah, I thought that too ("How hard can it be? It's just a USB storage
device..."), but trust me, plenty of the cheap no-name USB cameras don't
actually work without some proprietary windows crapware for 'album
management' or some similar idiocy.

I tried three different ones before hitting on the libgphoto2 heuristic.
