Exactly what I thought Sam! :) I have been surprised on occasion
digging through the thrift stores in Santa Fe & ABQ. Have also found a
APC 1U racmount with a SNMP monitoring card & hub, and HP Business
Inkjet 1200 that I thought were worth bringing home. There have been
some other finds - but if it does not power up, or if I don't think
all the cords are there I'll leave it.

Oh yea, I vaguely recall the presentation I caught at Toorcon 3 or 4
years ago that mentioned the tree forks leading up to DD-WRT.
So from one of the folks on my "old" LUG mailing list, they confirmed
that for this version 1 to use the VIN subtype .bin (the VIN subtype
is for the older radio types, like WRT54GSv1). Did not brick, and
works great.
Sadly, it dd-wrt will not work on my old BEFW11S4 Ver 3. :(
I will take at look at x-wrt - thanks for the pointer Sam.
