For the record, grub1 has been deprecated by the grub developers for
like 5 years or more. So despite me having been a big fan of the legacy
grub; It's _way_ past due that we start seeing grub2 in distros.
Also if you read between the lines in A's posts, he's not having any
trouble at all with grub2, it's very comfortably allowing him to boot a
known working kernel. (discussion of being Ubuntu's beta testers is
probably well applicable re: A's problem with that kernel ;)

Boot loaders are always scary because we rely so heavily on them working
(for about 2 seconds a month) but having a bunch of boot loaders on the
disk (from a distro that's pulling out the gimp "for space reasons")
doesn't seem very likely. So install time options are probably off the
table.
But for what it's worth grub2 can easily chainload grub1, (upgrades in
at least Debian, set this up by default.) and grub1 (and yes even lilo)
easily be apt-get installed once the install is done.
