If there is hardware specific requirements like PCI cards or direct
connections to serial ports VM's are not the most ideal solution. The
Linux servers in my environment do not require hardware specific needs
as they are running under a VMware ESX cluster with Vmotion, HA and DRS
enabled. If they where tied to physical hardware they would not be able
to move about the cluster or be locked to a single ESX host. That said
I can scale the VM as need by adjusting the VMs settings or by adding
more ESX hosts to the cluster or move it to a new cluster.
So in short no virtualization may not be the best solution for your
setup. You didn't mention the asterix/fax setup in your first email. =)
