[nmglug] Compiz, etc

Running from the live cd I mounted my Ubuntu disk (virtual) and checked
recently installed software that may have created the problem.
I see that I recently, in the last 2 days, updated and installed
libdrm-intel, libdrm2, xserver-org-video-intel, nvidia-glx. Could these
have some how created the problem?
I guess I could disable compiz from the command line and try starting X
again as compiz starts automatically at boot.
