I completely agree with Eric that visual inspection is preferred, IMHO 
his suggestion of direct observation is the best method;

However, for those doing this remotely to order parts prior to on-site 
inspection, there are other methods to confirm a Linux box supports 
SATA.  For example.

lspci |grep -i sata

lshw -businfo |grep storage
