Agreed that visual inspection is preferred, however, google for VIA VT6420
and you will find that VIA has this to say about it...
Supporting Serial ATA and Parallel ATA interface, the VIA VT6420 is
compatible with all kinds of ATA and ATAPI devices and provides up to four
Serial ATA channels for extended connectivity, offering systems builders
complete flexibility to incorporate HDD, CD-ROM, DVD and other types of ATA
and ATAPI devices into PC systems.
So I would guess that the system you have supports BOTH old style IDE/PATA
drives and the new SATA drives as well. Just because his old drive might be
PATA does not mean you have to replace it with PATA... you should be able to
use a SATA drive and see a performance increase... just be aware that he
might have to buy a SATA cable for the drive if he doesn't already have one.
