"I guess we can only hope the Linux wireless situation gets better with time!" Probably not for some wireless chips. In one recent kernel update in CentOS there were no drivers for the Intel 2200, but there was one for the 2100, which is older, so I don't know what happened. So I changed to Mint 13 and so far that works on that old laptop.
