As Nick P. suggested…..if the write-protect tab on the SD card is not the culprit the card will likely have to be formatted in the camera once the pictures have been downloaded.   The problem with accessing SD cards directly (via a reader as opposed to the camera being attached to the computer via USB) is that if a write occurs the file system can be altered or damaged causing problems. Cameras usually use FAT16 or 32 but they are not what I would call "normal" FAT16/32 file systems if one looks at them with a disk editor. I've seen this (SD card file system problems after direct access) many times. Usually I recover the photos with PhotoRec (CGSecurity) on the nearest Linux box and re-format the SD card in the camera…..and if that doesn't work it's usually the SD that's gone bad and replacement has solved the issue.
