NmGllug & Anthony, How about more details on your hardware and dmesg.
Have you looked at that? I am not sure you have differentiated between
hardware of software. Also during boot is the screen fully bright? If
not, there may be a bios/cmos setting to powersave? Keep trying and
maybe get to meeting or meet with somebody if you can let somebody
else take a look.
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and prefer the xfce desktop. Each of these
Ubuntu variants seems to put settings in different places if you are
using the gui. Always check the 'powersave' settings just to be sure.
