NMGlugers, Thank  you to Nick F. and John O. I will research ddrescue.
The budget for this is zero plus any time and energy I may have. I do
know of the rather costly options of deconstruction. There are only
issues of personal photos and a few documents. No items worth the high
end route. If all else fails, oh well, another reminder for timely
backups.
