Yep - when I first arrived only Ted was there (well, Robert too, but he is
always there first), and he tried to help me get a GUI up and running. Last
meeting Jason had kindly given me the x30 and we started to install Debian
but ran out of time to install all of the higher-level components (print,
web, and file servers, desktop environment [window manager], and so on).
Ted and I thought we could install those (through the application tasksel)
once the laptop got online, but were familiar only with NetworkManager,
which was not installed. Then my friend Max, who I invited, came in (his
first meeting), and we configured /etc/network/interfaces and ifconfig to
connect to the Ethernet cable below the public computer desk. But then
someone needed to use the public computer, so Max & I got food. Then Jason
arrived and used iwconfig to get on the wireless, install the
aforementioned components (choosing XFCE over the default Gnome 3 for
lightness), and some other packages. Meanwhile, discussions were had about
the systemd <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systemd> init daemon (not to be
confused with SystemV <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNIX_System_V>, as I
did at first), expensive audiophile brass-horn speakers modelled in CAD,
and other topics.
Anyway, now I have a working GUI! Thanks, all.
Currently trying to connect to my local network - it seems the command-line
parts of NetworkManager got installed, but not the GUI parts. No big deal,
I can install those after I connect.

I suppose the group is too informal to have a more standard reporting of
the events of meetings :P
Anyway, I guess I should mention that a lot of people showed up this time,
including Mark, who said he had been here a few years ago while passing
through from Britain. It was a lively session.
