Hi folks,

At yesterday's NMGLUG meeting, I proposed the idea that we could do a
Linux CD/DVD giveaway and install-fest (onto USB sticks) at the "Moneyless
Yard Sale" event at CCA on Sept. 6. This event (described below) is
organized by Axle Contemporary Art http://axleart.com as part of their
"Economologies" series of participatory events (see below). Several
people expressed interest yesterday, and I would like to know which of you
would like to help to make this happen. I have spoken with Jerry Wellman
at Axle, who expressed interest, especially in the give-away aspect of
whatever we could bring to the event.

Here is what I propose: We borrow or bring a long work-table and a long
extension cord (good for outdoors) and set up a couple of our laptops,
some CD and DVD Linux installation media and some printed material on it.
We could use the laptops to demonstrate a couple of flavors of Linux, to
burn additional DVDs as needed, and to install Linux for people onto USB
sticks (8 GB or preferably 16 GB) that they would bring (or maybe that
someone could donate). Does this sound like fun?

Other stuff we would need to bring are a couple of power-strips, an
ethernet switch and short cables, and a wifi connection with good range
(Oliver, maybe your new EUB9603H USB wifi dongle? Or someone who has an
Alfa?). I have an apt-cache of Debian/Ubuntu/Mint repos on my laptop to
speed up fresh installs, and scripts to copy VMs onto USB sticks. Maybe
we need also some penguin-themed paraphernalia to draw interest, and an
easy-up for some shade?

Let me/us know what you think. If several people would commit to pulling
this off together, then we can let Jerry know by next Monday that we will
do this, so that he can mention it in his main email blast about the
event. Please mention what you would bring, of the above-listed needs or
any others that you think of.

Thanks,
Geoff

MONEYLESS YARD SALE

Organized by Jerry Wellman, this event engages gifting, barter, and just
plain fun. Clothes, household items, kids' gear, books, artwork, and art
supplies - typical yard sale things and more - will be available,
literally, for a song, or a dance, or a poem, or a drawing, a service, for
trade, or whatever- but NOT FOR MONEY! All are invited to participate, set
up their space, or just drop by to browse.

Interested in setting up with your stuff? Contact Jerry at 505-670-7612 or
info at axleart.com to reserve your space.

Saturday, September 6th, 10am - 3pm, at Center for Contemporary Arts
(CCA), 1050 Old Pecos Trail

ECONOMOLOGIES: a series of exhibitions, discussions, interventions, and
events

This series explores art and action related to the ecology of economies,
art related to money, innovative and creative approaches to economics, and
interrelations between the fields of economics and ecology. The series
includes an exhibition of visual art, roundtable discussions,
performances, and installations. We aim to encourage a conversation around
the intersections of economics, ecology and art, including critical
commentary and new approaches and alternatives to the status quo.

w/Jerry and Matthew speaking about Economologies.
