A., No, never spend money on 'drivers' for Ubuntu or any Gnu-Linux
system. I suspect a rare but possible hijacking of your browser or
perhaps Thunderbird itself. Simplest is to copy all of your data to an
external back-up and then re-install. This is especially try if
everything was working before some recent date. It is my personal
belief that there are some hijacking exploits which affect Gnu/Linux
programs, especially ones which interact with the internet. But
luckily these are rare. Let's keep in touch, Ted P.
