I doubt encryption has anything to do with "upgrade space" - I would 
make sure to run 'apt autoremove' first and make sure all your old 
kernels are cleared out of /boot - that's the likely culprit. You might 
need to do this manually if something got hosed ... Also, 'apt install 
ncdu' and then run 'ncdu' in your root directory. This will give you a 
clear n-curses based look from the command line of what your 
offending/large sized directories are. Best luck palmolive.
