hmm, so sounds like the machine is trying to boot the USB stick and even
finding the bootloader. Are you sure you unpacked the zip file in the
same partition you syslinux'd? Are you sure it was a vfat partition?

You could try getting:
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/5-way.tgz
It's just a little tarball with static versions of the necessary tools
(syslinux, unzip etc) and directions. There's also a shell script in
there that I've not tried.
